Wk 2 Reading Rule #6

Wk2 Reading Rule#6

In reading through this week’s assignment I think I was hit with a harsh reality. I think I am guilty of being one of those who are just too “in the box”. My new goal is going to be to try and use Rule #6 more often. I want to allow myself and my students to laugh and experience the joy of music. I want to share my love for the subject and I want them to know how much I love what I teach.

  1. Hi Steve,

I think that this is a pretty easy trap to fall into. Most of us our very passionate about what we do, so we take it very seriously. And we want to be taken seriously. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. It's just hard to make sure that we don't also then cross the line into taking ourselves too seriously.

I think that's one of the things I love about teaching middle school. As frustrating as they can be at times, the students keep me honest and grounded. If I do something dumb, they will call me on it. Every time. And I'm trying to appreciate that. Have you ever been mired in one of those awful rehearsals and then someone says something that makes everyone laugh? It's amazing how that can turn a rehearsal around. And I'm starting to realize that it's okay if I'm the one who we are laughing at.

There is a time and a place to be serious about music and rehearsing, but there's also a time and place for light-heartedness. Mozart and Haydn knew this. I'm trying to make sure that I remember it, too.

  2. Hi Steve,

I too became too in the box or maybe too passive. I want to share my love of teaching with my students, but sometimes I feel as if my hands are tied. In my district, we have to teach to the state tests that are given, so thinking outside of the box is kinda hard to do. When they come to observe, they expect to see a certain thing. They have even gone as far as giving you a checklist of what they want to see when they come to observe you. How does one become creative in and atmosphere like this?
